studiOseed is the project of artist couple Luka and Tun Donker currently based in a small town called Lumsden (close to the Southern Lakes District, New Zealand). Our home and studio is set on a 1/4 acre garden in the village, a 100 year old settlers cottage, and we are transforming it as we live here. We learn by doing, and welcome others to do so as well. As well as working on creating visual art (drawings, paintings, digital, installation) we are busy with a small nursery of plants, landscaping our land inspired by permaculture philosophy and interior design and pallet furniture. We like to use recycled materials where possible for our renovations, to give new life to old things. We are working towards making accommodation available for paid guests and artist in residence exchanges. Presently we are busy parents with our little boy Kaya and can really use some extra hands.
We offer retreats for creatives living/traveling in NZ, accommodation in a little cabin in the garden, studio space, sharing plenty of good food and company in exchange for helping us on our projects. We are also open to workaway/wwoofer-style help.
Our lives became intertwined after living and working together in a Melbourne creative warehouse in 2012. Joining forces, we traversed 18 countries over three continents over three years, with our thirst to create art our guide and pursuit, leading us to the creative pulse of an international community of artists wherever we landed. Learning from and collaborating with a kaleidoscopic cast of humankind and the perspective-shifting, challenging experience of living life as a nomad brought a plethora of inspiration, which we can now reflect upon from our own patch of grass in the isolated South of Aotearoa.
